Iran Calls for Ceasefire in Lebanon, Pushing for Resolution of Ongoing Issues
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, tensions have escalated as Israel intensifies airstrikes on Hezbollah-controlled areas of southern Beirut, notably in the Dahiyeh suburbs. Israeli bombardment, now in its fourth consecutive day, has caused significant damage, flattening buildings, and targeting Hezbollah infrastructure such as munitions warehouses and headquarters. The strikes follow a broader context of hostilities, which began in late September and have caused a humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, displacing over a million people.
Amid the violence, Iran has expressed its full support for Lebanon's stance on achieving a ceasefire, with Ali Larijani, a senior Iranian official, stating that Tehran backs any decision made by the Lebanese government regarding peace talks. Larijani also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for undermining peace efforts, positioning Israel as the primary disruptor of a potential ceasefire.
The U.S. has been involved in diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire, with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon presenting a draft ceasefire proposal to Lebanon's Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, signaling movement towards a resolution. However, Israel has maintained its demand for freedom of action should Hezbollah violate any ceasefire terms, particularly regarding the movement of weapons north of the Litani River as per UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.
The European Union has condemned Israel's recent attacks, particularly the strike near Baalbek, which killed 12 paramedics, calling the targeting of healthcare workers a grave violation of international law. The UN also expressed concern over attacks on UN peacekeepers.
The casualty toll in Lebanon has risen sharply, with the Lebanese Health Ministry reporting 3,445 deaths since October 7, 2023. Israel, in turn, has seen around 100 civilians and soldiers killed as a result of Hezbollah's rocket attacks and other cross-border hostilities.
With the situation dire, the international community continues to press for a ceasefire based on previous UN resolutions, but the path to peace remains fraught with tension and disagreement over the terms.
