Part of the optimization of user experience, Instagram announced that it will lower the video quality of less popular content, to fail and receive a minimalist engagement. It is a big part of the larger moves that the social network implements as part of improving popular post visibility and reducing the bandwidth that lesser videos use.

This makes sense; by favoring the trending or most viewed videos in high quality, Instagram creates a more interesting and dynamic user experience. High-quality popular videos will thus attract more viewers, compelling content creators to make great material. It fits within the broader strategy of enhancing user interaction and keeping competitive in the crowded social media landscape.

This has, however triggered mixed reactions among the users and creators. In most cases, the worrying aspect is that the popularity of most of the creations will go unnoticed due to decreased visibility as they are termed as "unpopular." Moreover, lowering the quality of such videos will probably deter emerging artists and influencers as it becomes a harder task for them to get popularity and create audiences. Critics argue that the cycle would lead to more cases of low-quality contributions as a result of lower engagement. This would further isolate new creators who are battling for their name in the field.

There is also a related question of the diversity of content on the platform, because only popular content will be promoted. A risk here would be the dominance of the platform by established creators, which ultimately leads to a limitation in the variety of voices and perspectives that can be represented. Such users who enjoy exploring niche or emerging content will find it increasingly hard to discover new creators since the algorithm favors higher engagement metrics.

This decision by Instagram mirrors the continued evolution of social media, where engagement rates have become a critical factor for the visibility of content. With increasingly discerning audiences regarding what they watch and engage with, platforms continue to fine-tune their algorithms to ensure optimal user satisfaction and retention.
