Hyundai Partners with Startup to Develop Plant-Based Leather That Even Smells Like the Real Thing
Hyundai is stepping up its sustainability game with an innovative partnership: it’s working with New York–based startup Uncaged Innovations to develop leather-like material for cars that is plant-based, customizable, and even carries the scent of genuine leather. This project is part of Hyundai’s continued efforts to redefine eco-friendly luxury in automotive interiors using advanced materials technology.
Crafted from Plants, Designed to Perform
Uncaged’s material is made from grains like wheat, soy, and corn, offering a biodegradable, animal-free alternative that mimics the texture, color, and aroma of animal leather. It includes a bio-based polyurethane layer just 0.01 mm thick, for tactile control and durability. Natural pigments and embossing allow for visual and textural variety. Impressively, silvered floral fragrances can also be embedded to produce a faint leather-like aroma.
Why It Matters
- Dramatically lower emissions: This plant-based leather boasts up to a 95% smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional leather.
- Sensory realism: By recreating the “smell test,” this material bridges the sensory gap between vegan alternatives and conventional leather.
- Automotive-grade toughness: Uncaged is working to meet rigorous standards for wear, UV resistance, and temperature endurance.
This innovation aligns with a broader trend: consumers—especially of luxury and electric vehicles—are demanding interiors that prioritize both performance and planetary impact.
The Road Ahead
This isn't Uncaged’s first ride. The startup is already in talks with Jaguar Land Rover and now aims to scale production for Hyundai's upcoming models.([turn0search5]) With Hyundai's innovation divisions—like Cradle and ZER01NE—focused on sustainable tech, there's strong strategic and financial reinforcement behind this project.
The success of this collaboration could reshape expectations for automotive interiors industry-wide, particularly in the fast-expanding EV and luxury segments.
