Horror Reigns: "Weapons" Scares Up Victory Over "Freakier Friday" at the Box Office
This weekend’s box office showdown saw “Weapons”, a chilling horror thriller, surge to number one with an impressive $42.5 million in U.S. ticket sales, and $70 million globally. This success marks a major win for Warner Bros., delivering its seventh No. 1 opening of 2025 and the studio’s sixth consecutive title to debut above $40 million.
Tailoring to a completely different audience, Disney’s long-awaited sequel “Freakier Friday”—reuniting Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis for another round of body-switching comedy—claimed second place with a solid $29 million domestically.

Analysts note that this unique head-to-head worked in the box office’s favor. As Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian puts it, the pairing of horror and nostalgic comedy offered something for everyone, encouraging opening-weekend buzz and social media sharing.
Box office momentum continues upward, with domestic sales this year reaching $5.6 billion, up about 7.6% from the same point last year—despite a minor slowdown in recent weeks.

Marvel's “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, which previously dominated, slipped to third with $15.5 million in its third weekend. Other solid performers included “The Bad Guys 2” ($10.4 million) and “The Naked Gun” reboot ($8.4 million).
