Horrific Turn in the Case of American Nurse Missing in Europe
Mackenzie Michalski, a 31-year-old American nurse, was found dead in Budapest, Hungary, after disappearing during a birthday trip with friends. She was last seen at a nightclub in the Jewish Quarter of Budapest on Tuesday, but was reported missing after her belongings were found in her Airbnb, and she missed her scheduled flight to Amsterdam. Her body was later discovered after Hungarian police investigated several suspicious circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
Police identified a 37-year-old Irish man who had been seen with Mackenzie in several clubs that night. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and led authorities to where he had hidden her body. The man was arrested and charged with murder.
Mackenzie's friends and family, who had launched a collective search effort, expressed their deep sorrow in a statement, honoring her as a compassionate and positive individual who dedicated her life to helping others. A GoFundMe campaign raised over $36,000 for the search efforts. Candlelight vigils are planned in both Budapest and New York to remember her.
Her family emphasized that Mackenzie’s spirit was one of joy, kindness, and authenticity, and they expressed their gratitude that she is now at peace.
