Hollywood’s Representation Problem? Karla Mosley on Why She Walked Away
Karla Mosley Opens Up About Stepping Away from Trans Role in The Bold and the Beautiful
Why Karla Mosley Left The Bold and the Beautiful and Her Groundbreaking Role as Maya Avant
Karla Mosley, best known for her role as Maya Avant in The Bold and the Beautiful, is making headlines once again—this time for speaking candidly about why she stepped away from playing the iconic transgender character.
A Pioneering Role That Sparked Conversations
From 2013 to 2019, Mosley portrayed Maya Avant, a character that made history as the first transgender lead in a daytime soap opera. Her coming-out storyline in 2015 coincided with Caitlyn Jenner’s public transition, sparking conversations about transgender representation in media.
While Maya’s journey helped reshape narratives around gender identity, Mosley recently revealed that playing a trans woman as a cisgender actress was something she could no longer justify.
‘Truly Inappropriate’—Why She Walked Away
In a recent interview with People, Mosley shared that she initially hesitated to take on the role, feeling it wasn’t appropriate for her as a cisgender woman.
“When my boss asked me if I would do this story, I first was going to say no because it felt inappropriate for me to play that role as a cis woman,” she said.
Despite her concerns, Mosley ultimately accepted the role after encouragement from friends and colleagues who emphasized the importance of telling Maya’s story.
“If you don’t accept this story, this story won’t be told,” she recalled being told.
However, as conversations about authentic representation in Hollywood evolved, Mosley decided it was time to step away.
A Role That Changed Lives
Although she will no longer play transgender roles, Mosley acknowledges the significance of Maya’s character in opening doors for more inclusive storytelling.
“I am so grateful for that character because people who loved Maya and then had issues with what she said had to ask themselves, ‘Well, if I loved her yesterday, why don’t I love her today?’”
She revealed that Maya’s storyline helped foster discussions around identity and acceptance, leading to meaningful changes in families and communities.
Moving Forward: What’s Next for Karla Mosley?
Mosley is now focusing on new opportunities, including her latest role in CBS’s Beyond the Gates, where she plays Dani Dupree, a former model turned momager. While she has stepped away from trans roles, she remains committed to portraying characters with depth and impact.
“I would love to play a role with the kind of gravitas and importance that Maya had for sure.”
Her decision to step away from trans roles aligns with the ongoing push for better representation in Hollywood, ensuring that transgender characters are portrayed by trans actors.
