Story

All people are deemed “ugly” until they become 16 in a dystopian future where physical differences have been eradicated by society. At this point, people have to get cosmetic surgery done in order to meet society’s standards of beauty, which is to become “Pretty.” In order to enforce conformity, the procedure modifies not only their appearance but also their behavior and thoughts.

Teenage rebel Tally Youngblood starts to wonder about the consequences of her forced metamorphosis and how shallow it is. Tally plays a crucial role in the resistance movement against a system that prioritizes appearance over uniqueness and autonomy as she unearths the sinister reality behind the operation. Her quest questions conventional ideas of beauty and aims to bring authentic self-expression back to a society that values conformity above all else.

Plot Summary

Joey King’s character Tally Youngblood (a futuristic world where everyone must undergo a forced transformation at the age of sixteen to become “Pretty”) finds it difficult to accept the idea of forced beauty. Tally starts to oppose the system after she finds out about the harsh repercussions of the practice and the silence of those who disagree. Her disobedience takes her on a journey that uncovers the truth about the transformation process and puts her in risky situations with the authorities. Tally fights to reclaim individuality and challenge the dystopian status quo with the aid of friends and allies, including the brave Kevin Miles (Keith Powers) and the mysterious Sage (Kelly Gale).
