Story
There is a creeping darkness engulfing the people of Ravenwood, a small town. A young lady named Jay Height (Maika Monroe), who is dealing with the fallout from a traumatic experience, relocates to Ravenwood in quest of comfort and a new beginning. Her dreams of a quiet life are abruptly dashed when she discovers that an eerie presence is haunting her.
Something sinister follows those who stay too long in the town, despite its peaceful exterior concealing a terrifying secret. As Jay learns that the entity feeds on the anxieties and fears of its victims, her attempts to flee her haunting are greeted with a growing sense of dread. Jay discovers that the dark force pursuing her has a deep connection to her own past as she works to piece together the town’s troubling past as the presence becomes more intense.
Struggling to discern reality from delusion, Jay must confront her own deepest fears and uncover the truth about the malevolent force before it consumes her completely. As the lines between the supernatural and psychological blur, Jay must fight to survive against an enemy that is, quite literally, everywhere.
Plot
Jay Height moved to Ravenwood with the intention of getting away from her difficult past. But it does not take long to realize that the bucolic town is home to a sinister, evil force. Her life starts to experience strange things like shadows that do not make sense, whispers in the dark, and a constant sense of being watched.
Jay discovers disturbing tales of former residents who disappeared or were driven insane by comparable circumstances as she looks into the town’s past. Although they seem friendly, the residents are oddly evasive when it comes to the town’s past. In an old library, Jay follows her quest for answers and discovers documents pertaining to a long-standing curse that has afflicted Ravenwood. The curse is associated with a sequence of cruel rites performed to placate a fear-mongering evil force.
As the entity gets bolder and manifests in more terrifying ways, her investigation turns into a race against time. Jay can no longer tell the difference between her own psychological suffering and the supernatural, and her hold on reality starts to erode. Jay has to face her personal demons and unearth a long-forgotten truth about the entity that has followed her from her past in a desperate attempt to break the curse.
Jay engages in a terrifying showdown with the entity in the film’s climactic scene. Now that the curse’s origins and the town’s dark past have been made clear, Jay has to decide whether to face the entity and jeopardize her mental health or to leave Ravenwood behind in the knowledge that the curse will keep taking lives. She fights for her soul as well as for survival in this struggle.
