Story

The exciting action-horror movie The Prey from 2024 pays homage to the action and horror masterpieces from the 1980s. Franklin Correa is the director and writer of the film, which pays homage to the gritty, suspenseful movies of the past while incorporating contemporary elements.

The movie opens with a flashback that introduces us to legendary tracker and army veteran BJ Vega (Robert D. Parham). When BJ is brought in for a high-stakes hunting trip, he immediately suspects something is wrong. As the hunt goes on, BJ learns that something much more evil is pursuing him rather than just game. When BJ confronts the brutal leader of a Wendigo clan, Gregory DePetro, aka the Overseer, he barely escapes, leaving the Overseer and his followers enraged and threatening to exact revenge.

After more than 40 years, the Wendigo family discovers that BJ Vega has passed away while they are still searching for him. But instead of letting go of their resentment, the clan turns their attention to his son, Steven Vega (Daniel Mazikowski). The clan manipulates and coerces those around Steven because they are determined to get their hands on him.

Best friends with Steven, Louie (HB Gibson) is a low-life drunk and gambler who owes a lot of money to a local bookie named Lefty Jr. (Donald Charles). Louie convinces Steven to join him when he offers Steven the chance to pay off his debt and earn $10,000 in exchange for helping with an apparently simple task. Tracking wildlife in a remote area is part of the task, but as Steven begins his hunt, he notices that there are no signs of wildlife, which makes him suspicious.

Steven and Louie are stranded in a terrifying situation as night falls. When the Wendigo clan makes their true intentions known, the hunt turns into a deadly game in which survival depends on the outcome. To outwit the Wendigo and preserve both his and Louie’s lives, Steven will need to employ all of his cunning and survival expertise.

The film’s unrelenting pacing and eerie atmosphere heighten the suspense as Steven struggles to survive against the otherworldly predators. The danger grows with every turn and push, testing Steven’s endurance to the limit.

Steven engages the Overseer and his clan in a titanic struggle that will determine not only his life but also his soul. Steven learns the depth of the Wendigo’s thirst for vengeance as they unleash their fury and realizes that he must outwit them to avoid the horrors of the hunt.

The Prey is a gripping example of action and horror that combines classic thrills with modern suspense. The film, which is set against the eerie backdrop of Vacaville, California, captivates viewers with its unsettling images and unrelenting tension, making it an unforgettable tribute to the genre for fans of action and horror from the 1980s.

Plot

The Prey is an exciting tribute to 1980s action and horror films, perfectly evoking the nostalgia and suspense of vintage genre pictures. The protagonist of the tale is Robert D. Parham’s character, legendary tracker and army veteran BJ Vega, who is hired for what looks to be an ordinary hunting trip. But as BJ ventures farther into the wild, he begins to smell evil and makes the decision to run. The revelation occurs when he runs into Gregory DePetro, a.k.a. the Overseer, who is the leader of a cunning Wendigo clan. This encounter results in a lethal confrontation that frees BJ.

After more than 40 years, the Wendigo clan is still resentful and finds out about BJ’s passing. They focused on Steven Vega (Daniel Mazikowski), his son, and everyone associated with him. Steven is convinced to accompany his friend Louie (HB Gibson), a local bookie named Lefty Jr. (Donald Charles), on a hunt in exchange for Steven helping him pay off his debt and earning $10,000. But when Steven gets there, he finds the place eerily empty of wildlife, and he understands they have become the prey. For Steven to survive and keep Louie and himself safe, he must now navigate the lethal game that the Wendigo clan has set up.
