Story
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a story that takes place in the vast and wild reaches of the universe and centers on Kara Zor-El, a Krypton survivor who has a more tragic and sinister past than her cousin Superman. Unlike Clark Kent, who was a baby when Krypton exploded, Kara sees firsthand the destruction of her home planet. She struggles with her great power and spends years drifting aimlessly in space, haunted by memories of her past.
Kara travels to several alien worlds throughout the course of the narrative, where she meets and befriends both outcasts and protectors. Her inner conflicts—her grief, rage, and desire for vengeance—are explored throughout the film as she runs into vicious warlords, despotic leaders, and extraterrestrial bounty hunters. Together with Kara, a shadowy warrior named Ruthye seeks revenge on the evil Krem of the Yellow Hills for demolishing her home. Kara’s quest thrusts her into a conflict between celestial forces, challenging her morality as she struggles to decide between justice and mercy.
Kara is pessimistic about humanity, in sharp contrast to Superman’s upbeat and optimistic outlook, having seen the cruelty of the cosmos and the frailty of existence. As she learns to accept her power, her past, and her new role on Earth, her journey is not only physically but also profoundly emotionally taxing.
As both women pursue atonement, Kara and Ruthye’s friendship grows stronger and becomes a mentorship relationship along the way. Kara must choose between giving in to the anger and darkness that have consumed her for so long and embracing her Kryptonian heritage as a protector of life as her enemies draw near.
The movie tackles themes of loss, mourning, and finding the right balance between retribution and justice, giving us a much more nuanced and sinister picture of the Supergirl we know.
