Story
“Six Triple Eight” tells the true story of the 6888th Battalion, an all-Black Women’s Army Corps unit faced with an almost impossible task, and is set against the backdrop of World War II. Due to the war’s severe disruptions in 1943, there was a huge backlog of undeliverable mail, which isolated soldiers on the front lines from their loved ones. This massive stack of letters has the potential to demoralize both soldiers and their families.
To alleviate this crisis, the U.S. military uses the Six Triple Eight, a unit of over 800 dedicated Black female soldiers, to reduce backlogs. Even in the face of severe racial discrimination and doubt from superiors, these strong women approach the enormous task with unwavering determination. By organizing and delivering more than 17 million pieces of mail, they hope to bring people who have been torn apart by conflict together and give them hope.
As the battalion confronts prejudice and logistical challenges, they forge a path to success, proving their capabilities and reshaping perceptions about their role in the military.
Plot Summary
