Story
A diverse group of people, each with their own secrets, call the remote town of Eddington home. The town is rich in ghost stories and legends. The movie begins with Austin Butler’s disillusioned drifter character, Caleb, traveling to the town in search of safety from his turbulent past. A strange and unsettling sequence of events begins when the town’s reclusive millionaire passes away and Caleb’s mysterious arrival occurs.
Ted Garcia, the town’s sole saloon owner and a charming but dubious local, is portrayed by Pedro Pascal. Ted’s mysterious personality pulls Caleb into a web of trickery and mystery. Emma Stone plays Iris, the feisty and astute owner of the neighborhood boarding home who also keeps a few dark secrets of her own. As she works to make sense of the weird happenings in the town, her interactions with Caleb are a tense and romantic blend.
Caleb comes across a number of strange and terrifying incidents as he explores the town’s mysteries further. Joaquin Phoenix plays Reverend Wycliffe, a troubled preacher whose sermons have a foreboding, almost prophetic quality. Sheriff Grady, played by Luke Grimes, appears to be afraid of the supernatural forces that seem to be reawakening in Eddington, despite his tough exterior.
The town’s mysterious past starts to come to light, establishing a link between its residents and a string of terrifying paranormal incidents. Clifton Collins Jr., Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, and Deirdre O’Connell portray a group of eccentric townsfolk who each hold a piece of the puzzle, from ancient rituals to forgotten curses.
Caleb and Iris have to face not just the outside threats but also their inner demons as the horror factor grows. The town’s dark past and its connection to a malevolent entity that has lain dormant for years cause the line between reality and madness to become increasingly hazy.
The supernatural forces threatening to devour the people of Eddington are faced off against each other in the film’s climactic scene. A compelling finale that tests the characters’ understanding of reality and their own humanity is the result of the story’s deft integration of dark humor, dramatic tension, and genuine horror.
