The Righteous Gemstones concluded its third season with a heartwarming and surprisingly sweet finale that left viewers with a sense of completion. Co-creator, writer, and star, Danny McBride, revealed that he wanted each season to feel like a distinct and conclusive story, avoiding the common practice of dragging out plotlines to entice viewers for the next season.

In the finale, the Gemstone siblings, Jesse (Danny McBride), Judy (Edi Patterson), and Kelvin (Adam DeVine), came together to win the loyalty of racer Dusty Daniels (Shea Whigham), who had been a central figure throughout the season. Their journey to win him over culminated in a game of Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers, hosted by their flamboyant Uncle Baby Billy (Walton Goggins). However, things took an unexpected turn when a swarm of locusts invaded the event. In a selfless act, Jesse helped Dusty during the chaos, which finally won the old man over. This act of heroism also mended Jesse’s strained relationship with his father, Eli (John Goodman), the head of the family’s evangelical megachurch.

Yet, amid the locust mayhem, another crisis emerged. Kelvin and Keefe’s (Tony Cavalero) Smut Busters van contained a bomb, placed by Eli’s brother-in-law Peter (Steve Zahn) with malicious intentions. However, Peter had a change of heart and attempted to sacrifice himself by driving the van away before it detonated. In a tense moment, Peter managed to survive, but Dusty tragically lost his life.

The unexpected turn of events left the Gemstone family in possession of Dusty’s fortune, and all their goals were achieved. This led the family to gather on their property and take turns driving the monster truck named The Redeemer. The moment felt like an ending, but Danny McBride assures fans that the story of the Gemstone family is far from over.

Danny McBride expressed his commitment to telling complete and satisfying stories within each season of The Righteous Gemstones. He emphasized his dislike for the common practice of leaving major plotlines unresolved to keep audiences hooked for the next season, likening it to a soap opera strategy.

“I want every one of these seasons to feel final,” McBride stated. He believes that by doing so, viewers will experience a fulfilling journey with each chapter of the show. In a television landscape where serialized storytelling often prevails, The Righteous Gemstones sets itself apart by delivering compelling, standalone stories within each season.

Looking forward, McBride hinted at more exciting and engaging tales to come in future seasons. He indicated that the team behind The Righteous Gemstones is just getting warmed up, promising fans more remarkable and complete stories to enjoy.

The third-season finale proved to be a poignant and satisfying conclusion, showcasing the Gemstone family’s growth, unity, and individual character arcs. With Danny McBride’s dedication to crafting complete narratives, viewers can anticipate more immersive and fulfilling storytelling in the forthcoming seasons.

In the meantime, fans can catch up on the adventures of the Gemstones by streaming the third season on Max.
