In 2016, Selena Gomez took a stand for her best friend, Taylor Swift, after Kim Kardashian shared a video on Snapchat that appeared to show Swift approving Kanye West’s song lyrics. The controversy began when West used Swift’s name in his song “Famous.”

Kim Kardashian teased for weeks that she had proof of Swift’s approval for West’s lyrics, and she eventually released footage that seemed to depict Swift agreeing to West’s proposals. However, Swift had previously claimed that she did not approve of the precise words because she had not heard the entire song.

Amid the social media storm that followed, Selena Gomez took to Twitter to express her frustration with the entertainment industry’s priorities. Although Gomez did not explicitly name anyone in her tweets, it was widely believed that she was referring to the Swift-West-Kardashian controversy.

On July 18, 2016, Gomez tweeted, “There are more important things to talk about… Why can’t people use their voice for something that f**king matters?”

She followed up with another tweet, stating, “Truth is the last thing we need right now—hatred, in any form.”

In a third tweet, Gomez expressed her disappointment with the entertainment industry, writing, “This industry is so disappointing yet the most influential smh (shaking my head).”

The controversy between Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Kim Kardashian stemmed from the release of Kardashian’s Snapchat footage, in which Swift was heard speaking to West about his song “Famous.” Swift’s representative clarified that West had not sought approval for the specific lyrics but had asked Swift to promote his single “Famous” on her Twitter account. Swift declined, citing the song’s misogynistic content. The controversy fueled a public feud between the three celebrities and garnered significant media attention.
