Ridley Scott‘s upcoming historical war epic, “Napoleon,” promises to be a thrilling cinematic journey into the life and legacy of the infamous French military commander. With Joaquin Phoenix reprising his collaboration with Scott after their successful partnership in “Gladiator,” the film is set to captivate audiences with its grandeur and gripping narrative. Set during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution and the early 19th century, “Napoleon” follows the rise of the ambitious military leader who would become France’s emperor, only to meet his ultimate downfall.

“Napoleon” is financed and produced by Apple Studios, and it reunites Ridley Scott with the talented actor Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the titular role of Napoleon Bonaparte. The film’s supporting cast includes Tahar Rahim as a French politician, Ben Miles as a French diplomat and Bonaparte’s advisor, and Ludivine Sagnier as a socialite. The trailer sets the stage with the beheading of Marie Antoinette, signaling the end of the French monarchy and the chaos that ensues during the French Revolution. Amidst the power vacuum, Napoleon rises as the commander tasked with quelling the rebellions, leading to a series of successful military campaigns in Egypt and beyond. His triumphs eventually pave the way for him to seize control of France and become its emperor, but with ambition fueling his actions, bloodshed follows.

Born in 1769, Napoleon Bonaparte was a military genius who rose through the ranks during the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1799, he orchestrated a coup d’état, taking political power for himself and eventually declaring himself Emperor in 1804. With an unyielding ambition, Napoleon embarked on a relentless quest for territorial expansion, creating the vast French Empire. Despite his achievements, he faced setbacks, including a brief exile to the island of Elba. However, he returned to power in 1815, only to meet his final defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. Exiled again, he spent his remaining years on the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died in 1821 at the age of 51.

Ridley Scott’s desire to create a film about Napoleon has been a lifelong aspiration. Notably, legendary director Stanley Kubrick had also sought to make a Napoleon film in 1969 but couldn’t secure financial backing after the commercial failure of the 1970 film “Waterloo.” Scott, in an interview with Deadline, expressed his fascination with Napoleon, a man who rose from obscurity to conquer the world in a romantic war with his adulterous wife, Josephine. The film is set to explore the complex dynamics of their relationship and the impact it had on Napoleon’s actions and conquests.

“Napoleon” is poised to be another historical epic from the visionary director Ridley Scott. With Joaquin Phoenix‘s stellar performance as Napoleon Bonaparte, the film promises to transport audiences to a pivotal era in history, rife with revolution, conquest, and tragedy. Scott’s passion for bringing this iconic figure’s story to life shines through, offering viewers a captivating blend of history and romance. As the film premieres in theaters this fall and later on Apple TV+, fans of epic sagas and historical dramas eagerly await a cinematic masterpiece that celebrates the life and legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte.
