Patrick Mahomes and Lionel Messi Make History with Dual Wins at ESPY Awards

At the 2023 ESPY Awards on Wednesday, quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl, and Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who will soon play for Inter Miami, won many awards each. The celebration took place tonight in Los Angeles, where Mahomes, who led the Kansas City Chiefs over the Philadelphia Eagles in this year’s Super Bowl, was voted Best Athlete, Men’s Sports, and Best NFL Player. His Chiefs took home the Best Team ESPY.

Messi won for Best Soccer Player and Best Championship Performance, the latter for leading Argentina to his first World Cup championship in December. Messi, widely considered one of the best players of all time, touched down in the U.S. earlier in the week in advance of his introduction Sunday as the newest member of Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami. He is scheduled to make his debut with the team July 21.

Mikaela Shiffrin, the U.S. ski champion, received the award for Best Athlete, Women’s Sports, LeBron James, the star of the Los Angeles Lakers, received the award for Best Record-Breaking Performance for breaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA scoring record, and Shohei Ohtani, the star of the Los Angeles Angels, received the award for Best MLB Player.

Liam Hendriks, a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance, while the United States Women’s Soccer Team received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. The Buffalo Bills training staff was given the Pat Tillman Award for Service for saving Damar Hamlin’s life after he had a heart attack during a game.
