Liam Neeson, known for his role as Qui-Gon Jinn in “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” recently shared some intriguing insights about his time in the “Star Wars” galaxy on the “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend” podcast. While the actor playfully teased the franchise’s expansion with sequels and spin-offs, he also revealed a delightful behind-the-scenes moment from his early days as a Jedi.

One of the most iconic elements of “Star Wars” is the lightsaber, and Neeson recalled his first lightsaber action scene alongside Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi). Surprisingly, both actors couldn’t resist making lightsaber noises while filming.

Neeson chuckled as he remembered, “The first time we actually had to use the lightsaber to start a little fight… We both automatically [made the noises].” However, their enthusiasm was quickly quelled by none other than George Lucas himself. The director advised, “Let’s cut there. Boys, we can add that in later.”

This anecdote provides a charming glimpse into the playful spirit on the “Star Wars” set and the dedication of the actors, even when wielding imaginary weapons.

Neeson also touched on the ever-evolving world of filmmaking, particularly regarding visual effects. He recalled a conversation with his makeup artist during “The Phantom Menace,” where she humorously noted that her efforts might go unnoticed amidst the groundbreaking CGI and visual effects. Neeson humorously recounted her words, “I did see a mock-up of the monster, and you could be a monkey smoking a pipe, and no one is going to be looking at you.”

As “Star Wars” continues to expand its universe through various projects, Neeson’s reflections serve as a reminder of the enduring magic of the franchise and the behind-the-scenes moments that make it all the more special.
