The presiding court disapproved of an earlier plea deal that connected the two alleged offences, so President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden entered a not guilty plea on July 26 to federal tax and gun charges.

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika expressed “concerns” at the hearing on July 26 about how Mr. Biden’s plea deal connected tax offences to the resolution of criminal gun charges.

Donald Trump‘s previous appointment Judge Noreika stated that she was unable to accept the agreement as it stands.

Mr. Biden filed a not guilty plea after negotiations concerning the agreement’s framework between the prosecution and defence team during the trial.

On June 20, the prosecution claimed that Mr. Biden had agreed to plead guilty to charges of felony gun possession as well as willful failure to pay federal income
taxes.

The judge stipulated that Mr. Biden must refrain from using alcohol and illegal drugs, submit to random drug testing, refrain from owning a gun, “continue or actively seek employment,” and divulge all intentions for international travel.

According to an indictment, the president’s son collected more than $1.5 million in taxable income in 2017 and an additional $1.5 million in 2018. Each of those years, he was compelled by law to pay income tax on his earnings totaling more than $100,000. He “did willfully fail” to pay the tax, nevertheless.

These are misdemeanour counts. Each is punishable by a year in jail.

In the latter half of 2020, Mr. Biden said that authorities were looking into his “tax affairs.” He stated, “[I am] confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately.”

A 2022 subpoena that was made public revealed that David Weiss, the US attorney for the District of Delaware, was ordering JPMorgan Chase financial to turn up Mr. Biden’s financial data. Later, IRS officers spoke up to say that the probe wasn’t being conducted correctly.

In a different case, Mr. Biden is accused of using and abusing a controlled narcotic while unlawfully possessing a handgun, which is a felony.
