Berlin: Mubi Takes Scorsese-Narrated ‘Made in England’ in Multi-Territory Deal

The European Film Market in Berlin saw a flurry of activity as it neared its conclusion, with Mubi making a significant acquisition. The art house streamer announced its acquisition of David Hinton’s documentary, “Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger,” narrated by Martin Scorsese, for a multi-territory release across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Mubi has secured all rights in German-speaking Europe, Italy, France, and Benelux, as well as in Latin America, Turkey, and India. The documentary, which had its world premiere in Berlin as part of the Berlinale Special, explores the life and work of British filmmaking duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, renowned for creating cinematic masterpieces such as “The Red Shoes,” “Black Narcissus,” and “A Matter of Life and Death.”

Martin Scorsese’s involvement adds a special touch to the documentary, with the acclaimed director sharing his personal connection to Powell and Pressburger’s films and how they influenced his own filmmaking journey. Hinton had access to a treasure trove of archival material from Powell, Pressburger, and Scorsese’s personal collections, including diaries, audio recordings, home movies, and personal snapshots, providing a comprehensive look at the duo’s impact on cinema.

This deal comes on the heels of major acquisitions by Sony Pictures at the Berlin Film Festival. Sony secured worldwide rights to “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” a romantic fantasy starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, as well as international rights (excluding Russia, China, and Japan) to A24’s “Materialists,” featuring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.

With “Made in England,” Mubi continues to bolster its lineup of thought-provoking and culturally significant films, offering audiences around the world a unique cinematic experience.
