Netflix has hatched a delightful surprise for animation fans with the release of the official trailer for “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget,” the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 2000 stop-motion comedy, “Chicken Run.” Prepare to flock to your screens because this feathered adventure is set to premiere on Netflix this December.
“Dawn of the Nugget” introduces an entirely new voice cast and continues the tale of Ginger, voiced by Thandiwe Newton, who dreams of establishing a peaceful sanctuary far from the clutches of the human world, especially the sinister Tweedy farm. After escaping from Tweedy’s clutches, Ginger and Rocky, played by Zachary Levi, seem to have found their “happily ever after” as they raise the adorable Molly, portrayed by Bella Ramsey. However, unbeknownst to them, a new and dire threat looms on the horizon, endangering chicken-kind once more.
The sequel welcomes fresh voices into the fold, with Thandiwe Newton taking up the mantle of Ginger, a role originally voiced by “Absolutely Fabulous” actor Julia Sawalha. Zachary Levi steps into the character of Rocky, previously voiced by Mel Gibson in the first film. Fans will be pleased to hear that Miranda Richardson reprises her role as the wicked arch-villainess Mrs. Tweedy, while comedian Peter Serafinowicz joins the “Chicken Run” family as the baffled businessman Reginald Smith.
The newly unveiled trailer provides a sneak peek into the challenges awaiting Ginger and Rocky as they unite to thwart Mrs. Tweedy’s malevolent operation. Director Sam Fell praised the character of Mrs. Tweedy, labeling her as one of the greatest villains of all time. He said, “They say a movie is only as good as its villain, and Ginger’s nemesis, Mrs. Tweedy, is one of the all-time greats.” Fell expressed admiration for Miranda Richardson’s ability to seamlessly blend drama and comedy, keeping audiences both entertained and on the edge of their seats.
Joining Richardson and Serafinowicz in the talented ensemble cast are Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton, Lynn Ferguson, Josie Sedgwick-Davies, David Bradley, Romesh Ranganathan, Daniel Mays, and Nick Mohammed.
The original “Chicken Run,” conceived by Nick Park, the creator of “Wallace and Gromit,” and Peter Lord, co-founder of Aardman Animations, soared to success, grossing over $225 million worldwide. It held the distinction of being the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time.
With “Chicken Run 2,” the story picks up over two decades later, remaining true to the original’s charm and humor. The script was penned by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O’Farrell, and Rachel Tunnard. Steve Pegram and Leyla Hobart serve as producers, with executive producers including Nick Park, Peter Lord, Karey Kirkpatrick, and Carla Shelley.
Get ready to embark on an egg-citing journey when “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” takes flight on December 15, exclusively on Netflix. It’s a feathery adventure that promises to warm hearts and tickle funny bones, making it a must-watch for the holiday season.
