Liver Repair Using Lab-Grown Cells

Liver function is something that the human body simply cannot do without. With the shortage of liver donors reaching an all-time high, researchers knew that something had to be done. Some of the best and brightest minds in the business came together (NIHR and Cambridge Biomedical Research Center) to find a solution that would save lives, and it looks like they have. Since transplants aren’t an option in many cases (malfunctioning bile ducts cause more than 70% of liver damage in children, and the same holds true for one-third of adults), these researchers have developed a technique to grow “mini bile ducts” in a lab environment. Human gallbladder cells are used to grow these mini bile ducts and can repair liver damage without a transplant being necessary. With this innovation, more liver donors could be able to donate and save yet more lives; never before has this procedure been applied to human organs, and it could be the first of many.

Single Dose Breast Cancer Treatment

Long-term breast cancer treatment could soon be a thing of the past. Since 2020, more studies and advancements have been made regarding breast cancer therapy that takes only thirty minutes and is equally as effective as the traditional breast cancer treatment. This study was initially conducted by the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme as well as Cancer Research UK. It involved researchers at 32 hospitals in ten countries across the world. Target Intraoperative Radiotherapy, as the treatment is known, is delivered to the patient immediately after a tumor is removed. The treatment works via a small ball containing one dose being placed in the breast directly after surgery. While conventional treatment can take from three to six weeks, TARGIT-IORT takes between 20 and 30 minutes. The number of potential side effects is significantly lower with this new form of treatment and will dramatically reduce the mortality rate of any side effects that do occur.

LDL Reduction Treatment

High cholesterol is a killer; there’s no doubt about it. Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDLs) are a significant contributor to heart disease, particularly later in life. Thankfully, the FDA has recently reviewed and approved an application for a new treatment that could be incredibly effective. Inclisiran has proven to minimize high cholesterol or hyperlipidemia in adults; this treatment is injectable and targets the PCSK9 protein, and only requires around two doses a year to be effective. Used in conjunction with statins, the therapy shows significant results and, in the long term, may help even if other medication isn’t present or taken. This research and these developments are considered to be something of a game-changer for many heart disease patients.

Oral Antibiotics for Cystic Fibrosis Issues

A solution ten years in the making has finally been proven effective. We now know that something as small and simple as an oral antibiotic effectively treats some common complications that arise from cystic fibrosis. This extensive study was conducted in more than 70 cystic fibrosis centers in Italy and the UK and included 286 patients who gave their time to help reach this breakthrough. The win here is dealing with a bacterium called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common cause of lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients. Oral antibiotics have been proven just as effective as intravenous ones in treating this particular issue which means that patients don’t have to travel to a hospital for treatments.
