Where Should Far Cry Go Next?

After a long wait for its release, Far Cry 6 became one of the bigger and more interesting game releases of 2021. However, as is always the case with this series, a brand new game only heats up speculation about where the series could go next — given how much each new release relies upon and highlights a specific setting. So, where do you think Far Cry could end up next?

Atlantis
Atlantis is more of a mythical or fantastical option, but perhaps it could be a fun turn for the series. An archaeological near-future “discovery” of Atlantis resulting in a massive excavation would be a fun, chaotic setting for a Far Cry game. It would also give the developers endless creative range, with Atlantis not only fictional but not having been explored in too much detail in a modern game. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance touched on it without going too far into detail.

Currently, Atlantis features in both a city-building strategy game (called City Of Atlantis) on Steam, and a slot game (called Mighty Atlantis) on Gala Bingo online. The former more or less lets the player build up a civilization, while the latter presents a mythical vision of the lost city in and around a traditional slot reel. But neither of these games could do the sort of full setting immersion a Far Cry game would.

Peru
A third-world country with the beautiful Amazon jungle, remote, chaotic, undiscovered ruins, organized (and not-so-organized) crime, and the hallucinogenic Ayahuasca could serve as an excellent setting for a Far Cry game. Plenty of movies and shows have been set there, such as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Peru features a huge number of ancient cultures – most famously the Incas, but they were also home to the Chavin, the Nazca, and the Paracas among many others. With these civilizations also came languages: a game such as Far Cry would be an excellent opportunity to showcase the few remaining speakers of Quechua and Aymara.

Hawaii
The Hawaiian archipelago of 137 volcano islands could be the perfect watery setting for the next Far Cry game. Featuring various modes of transportation such as shuttle, bus, ferry, or even surfboard, you could get between islands in order to progress. The Makawao Forest and the Kaneana Cave both offer a cold, dangerous setting. While games such as Pokémon Sun and Moon were set in Hawaii (although under a different name) and showed the light, cheery parts of the islands, Far Cry could go deeper into the darker crevices with a bit of creativity and poetic license.

Uganda
A landlocked country – with the exception of Lake Victoria – full of wildlife is a great setting for a game like Far Cry. What could go wrong, after all? Driving around full speed in a boda boda, a small motorcycle taxi reminiscent of a rickshaw is an excellent and completely unsafe way of getting from border to border. While Uganda hasn’t been featured in many games, the most recent being Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2011 released in…you guessed it: 2010, a game in a series like Far Cry would do very well in this African country.

The Far Cry franchise games have done amazingly well with the settings they’ve used, so we’re more than confident that they’d be able to pull off a successful Far Cry 7, regardless of the setting(s) the studio chooses.
