The one incident that made Goolam Vahanvati decide that he wanted to be a lawyer

Goolam Vahanvati was one of the most highly regarded lawyers of his generation. His dedication towards the law and his constant hard work helped him quickly rise through the ranks and eventually to the top position in the Indian judicial system which is the attorney general of India.

Talking about his early life, ever since he was a kid, Goolam wanted to be a lawyer and follow into the footsteps of his father Essaji Vahanvati. As a kid; he would often spend hours in the courtroom when is father was working a case and there was one instance that had a profound effect on him that made him want to be a lawyer.

In an interview, Goolam recalled a time where his father was fighting a case and it got to the point where he asked the judge to check the law book if he was wrong, to which the judge said that they trust his word.

Years later when Goolam was in the court, a similar incident happened to him which made him believe that he was following in his father’s footsteps.

During his career, Goolam had been a part of numerous high profile cases and has had numerous achievements under his belt. He had a legendary reputation across India when he was a just a junior lawyer. In 1990 he was promoted to the position of a senior counsel and in 1999, he was appointed as the Advocate general of Maharashtra.

When the UPA rose to power in 2004, Goolam was offered the position of Solicitor General of India and then in 2009 he started his term as the Attorney General of India until his untimely demise in 2014.
