Jimmy Cozier is an American origin R&B singer and songwriter who hails from Crown Heights in Brooklyn. Both Jimmy and his younger brother Malik share attachment towards their hometown. Jimmy’s family was involved in music big time, helping him get an inside view of how things work and exposing him to ground reality. Ever since he was a kid, he was musically inclined. His father, being a musician himself, also motivated him to pursue his dreams without hesitation. He would rather demand that he would perform in group settings that eventually boosted his confidence and made him ready for stage performances.
He is the son of Guyanese American jazz saxophonist Jimmy Cozier, and Dawn Cozier, a Jamaican born hairstylist. His musical journey began as a singer and songwriter for artists such as Mýa, Sinéad O’Connor, and Janet Jackson whose hit “Girlfriend/Boyfriend” was also co-written by Jimmy. Jimmy was also a background vocalist for the Junior Mafia/Lil’ Kim track “Backstabbers” and toured with Joe behind the latter’s album All That I Am.
His debut single “She’s All I Got” which was released in 2001, became a blockbuster and even went viral on charts. This was a turning point for his musical career and he knew he has arrived with this record. It even rose to 26th on the Billboard Hot 100 and to 4th on the R&B chart, and this was just the beginning. He has even written songs for Chris Brown, Olivia and Cheri Dennis over the years. After the folding of J Records, he became an independent artist, expanding himself and creating his own label, Cozi Music Inc. Creating his own label was surely a new phase in his life.
