Farewell to the Voice of a Generation: James Carter Cathcart, Legendary Pokémon Actor, Dies at 71

Today, the entertainment world mourns the loss of James Carter Cathcart, the voice behind Meowth, Team Rocket’s James, Professor Oak, Gary Oak, and many other beloved characters in the Pokémon franchise. He passed away on July 8, 2025, in hospice care at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York, after a battle with throat cancer. Cathcart was 71.

From Rockstar to Voice Actor

Born in March 1954 in New Jersey, Cathcart began his creative journey with the rock band The Laughing Dogs, who performed at CBGB and released albums on Columbia Records in the late 1970s. He transitioned into voice acting in the 1980s, notably voicing Cap’n O.G. Readmore on the ABC Weekend Special, laying the groundwork for a prolific animation career.

A Pokémon Icon

Cathcart’s most enduring legacy began in 1998’s Pokémon: The First Movie, voicing Fergus. He then became the long-standing voice for:

  • Meowth
  • Team Rocket’s James
  • Professor Oak
  • Gary Oak

He contributed to more than 30 Pokémon productions—including TV series, movies, and games—voicing characters in over 700 episodes before retiring in 2023.

Beyond Pokémon

He also left his mark on other beloved franchises, providing voices in Sonic the Hedgehog (Vector the Crocodile), Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kirby, and more. His talents extended behind the scenes, too—script adapting and directing voice ensembles for various animated and gaming projects.

A Warm, Compassionate Spirit

Reflecting on his life, voice colleague Erica Schroeder—who portrayed Eevee—shared emotional praise on Instagram:

“One of the most joyful, exuberant, kind-hearted and talented souls… I was happy to call you my friend.”

His wife, Martha Jacobi, confirmed via Facebook that Cathcart’s passion was bringing joy to fans. His funeral will be held next month in New York, with donations honorably directed toward a charity meaningful to him.
