Erik Menendez Hospitalized with Kidney Stones, Lawyer Urges Furlough Ahead of Parole Hearing
On July 18, Erik Menendez was transported from the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility to a nearby hospital after experiencing a serious medical condition. According to the California Department of Corrections, he is currently in “fair condition”.
His attorney, Mark Geragos, confirmed to TMZ that Menendez is being treated for severe kidney stones, a painful and potentially complex condition.
Call for a Medical Furlough
With his parole hearing scheduled for August 21–22, Geragos is urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to grant a medical furlough. He argues that allowing Menendez to recuperate outside prison walls would give him the best chance to actively prepare for his hearing.
“It’s a serious condition and he needs to be out so he can focus on the hearing,” Geragos told Fox News, adding it would be “the only fair and equitable thing to do”.
What Kidney Stones Mean for Him
While kidney stones can often be managed with pain relief and hydration, severe cases may require hospitalization or surgery. For Menendez, treating this condition now is seen as essential to avoid further complications and ensure his active participation in parole proceedings.
Case Context & Legal Momentum
Menendez, now 54, and his brother Lyle were originally sentenced to life without parole for the 1989 murders of their parents. In May, both were resentenced to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole.
Their upcoming hearing takes place as a Los Angeles judge weighs whether evidence of past sexual abuse by their father, raised in a habeas corpus petition, could justify reexamining their convictions.
Following the hearing, Gov. Newsom will make the final decision, potentially by Labor Day, based on the parole board’s recommendation.
