Tyne Daly, the esteemed American actress known for her illustrious career spanning six decades, has unfortunately withdrawn from the upcoming Broadway production of Doubt due to an undisclosed health-related issue. Daly, aged 77, was slated to star as Sister Aloysius in the revival of John Patrick Shanley’s acclaimed play Doubt: A Parable, directed by Tony Award nominee Scott Ellis.
Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Daly hails from a family with a rich background in acting. Her parents, actor James Daly and actress Mary Hope, instilled in her a passion for the craft from a young age. Daly began her career in theater and quickly rose to prominence with her captivating performances on stage and screen.
Throughout her career, Daly has garnered numerous accolades, including six Emmy Awards for her outstanding television work, a Tony Award for her contributions to Broadway, and induction into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2011. She has showcased her versatility across various genres, excelling in both dramatic and comedic roles.

In 2024, Daly was poised to return to Broadway in the revival of John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt opposite Liev Schreiber. However, her recent hospitalization has forced her to withdraw from the production, prompting a swift replacement. Tony nominee Isabel Keating stepped in as Sister Aloysius for the initial performances until Amy Ryan assumes the role on February 13.
Director Scott Ellis expressed his gratitude to Keating for her seamless transition and praised Ryan for her swift acceptance of the role. Despite Daly’s absence, the production moves forward with a stellar cast, including Liev Schreiber, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, and Zoe Kazan.
Doubt: A Parable is set to officially open on March 7 at the Todd Haimes Theatre on Broadway, offering audiences a compelling exploration of faith, morality, and uncertainty. While Daly’s unexpected departure is a setback, her health and well-being remain paramount, and fans eagerly await her return to the stage once she makes a full recovery.
