Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ms. Lauryn Hill, and Megan Thee Stallion are set to take the stage as headliners at this year’s Global Citizen Festival. The renowned anti-poverty nonprofit organization aims to shed light on the growing inequality faced by girls and young women worldwide.

The festival, scheduled for September 23rd at New York‘s Central Park, will serve as a focal point for Global Citizen’s campaign to rally supporters, particularly in the Gen Z demographic, to take action against gender inequality, climate change, and other pressing issues.

CEO of Global Citizen, Hugh Evans, emphasized the significance of the event in an interview with The Associated Press, stating that it will be the cornerstone of the organization’s efforts to empower Gen Z supporters and combat the prevailing sense of disillusionment and powerlessness among them. Evans acknowledged a shift in the global landscape, noting that data suggests the world is regressing, contrary to the previous momentum that had been driving positive change and the potential eradication of extreme poverty.

Recent studies have revealed that half of Gen Z individuals feel a sense of disillusionment and lack agency to make a positive impact on the world. To address these concerns, Global Citizen’s campaign aims to tackle various challenges, including gender inequality and climate change, and prompt actionable change.

The United Nations Population Fund reports that around the world, 257 million women desire to avoid pregnancy but lack access to modern contraceptives. Additionally, the fund’s efforts to provide reproductive health services are currently underfunded by $100 million. Moreover, Education Cannot Wait, a United Nations fund that ensures continued learning for approximately 20 million children in crisis, requires $670 million to sustain its work.

The Global Citizen Festival not only offers a remarkable lineup of artists, including Stray Kids, a popular K-pop sensation, and singer-songwriter Conan Gray, but also provides free tickets to attendees who take actions on the group’s app and website, aligning with the organization’s goals. These actions may involve urging countries like Canada, Norway, and Japan to increase donations to the United Nations Population Fund or encouraging companies to join the United Nations Race to Zero by setting targets for reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, Global Citizen aims to push governments, such as those of the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, and Australia, to allocate more funding to vulnerable nations to help them adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
