Dwayne Johnson in Talks to Reprise Role in Moana 2

Recent reports suggest that Dwayne Johnson, also known as “The Rock,” is currently in discussions to return to the role of Maui in the highly anticipated sequel, Moana 2. The sequel’s existence was confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger during a recent earnings report, surprising fans with the announcement of a theatrical release instead of the initially planned Disney+ series.

While Disney has not officially announced the casting details, Deadline reports that Dwayne Johnson is close to finalizing his return as Maui in Moana 2. Additionally, Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the character of Moana in the original film, is also in talks to reprise her role, although her negotiations are not as advanced as Johnson’s.

The confirmation of Moana 2’s release date on November 27 aligns with the premiere of “Wicked: Part One,” indicating Disney’s confidence in capturing the box office success of its predecessor. Directed by Dave Derrick Jr., the sequel will feature music from talented artists such as Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina. Notably, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who contributed to the music of the original film, will not be involved in the sequel’s music production.

Johnson’s potential involvement in Moana 2 is significant, especially considering his role in producing and starring in the live-action adaptation of the original film. However, while Cravalho will not be reprising her role in the live-action version, her participation in the animated sequel remains a possibility.

With Moana hailed for its animation, music, and cultural representation, Disney aims to replicate its success with the sequel. The original film achieved widespread acclaim, grossing over $600 million worldwide and earning a place as a beloved modern Disney classic.
