Do you know that trend on TikTok called “bed rotting”? It’s all about willingly spending most, if not all, of your day in bed. The term “bed rot” refers to those times when you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or emotionally drained, and you end up seeking solace in your cozy haven. It doesn’t really matter what you do in bed during these times—it’s just your personal space to recharge.

We all deserve a break now and then, and it’s ludicrous to think we should be productive every single day. It’s essential to find a balance and go at your own pace. Some days you’ll be on fire, getting things done left and right. Other days, you might feel like you’re stuck in the final season of your favourite web series, just going through the motions. So, don’t feel guilty about spending most of the day wrapped up in bed—it’s a valid way to recharge.

However, there’s a catch. Bed rot becomes a problem when it becomes excessive. If you start losing track of time, wondering if the seasons have changed during your bed rot, that’s a red flag. It’s never a good idea to indulge in anything excessively, except maybe when it comes to avocados.

Another issue arises when you resort to bed rot as a way to avoid responsibilities or tasks. If your last words before diving into bed were, “I’ll get you that report ASAP” or “I’ll get back to you on the marriage proposal,” then bed rot might seem tempting. It can feel like a form of escapism, wrapping yourself in blankets, bedsheets, and Nutella. But let’s be honest, it won’t solve many problems.

What matters is how your bed rot affects your overall health and life, as well as the level of control you have over it. It’s important to find a balance between taking time for yourself and addressing your responsibilities. So, go ahead and enjoy some bed rot every now and then, but remember to keep it in check and not let it consume your life.
