Akon reflects on how Eminem came to produce “Smack That”

Akon remembers his successful collaboration with rapper Eminem and offers a flashback.

Akon discussed his collaborations with Dr. Dre and Eminem in an episode of The Bootleg Kev Podcast.

“Except for Smack That, every record I’ve ever released was genuinely produced by myself. The song’s producer was Eminem. Is that not absurd? He had those tiny noises all the time; they were tiny, but they felt like Eminem.

Akon remembered that he didn’t anticipate Eminem to be as talented a producer. In Detroit, Akon asked Eminem about working together. Slim Shady was told by the Lonely rapper that he wanted to enter his universe.

He handed me a folder containing about 30 tracks. And I chose five out of 30. I then recorded all five, with Smack That standing out. “Bro, this is it, I was like,” he recalled.

After hearing my idea, he exclaimed, “Yo, I’m jumping on this one. “You know what, if he jumps on this one, this will be a single,” I replied. In addition to all the others we did, that was the only one we ever had together. I still have them, though. I still possess such records in actuality. All the records that will be released in the future are listed here.

Smack was made available in 2006 for Akon’s album Konvicted. That has had more than 570 million Spotify streams and more than 950 million YouTube views. It is Akon’s most streamed song ever and the fifteenth most streamed single in Marshall’s discography.
