Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, best known for his role as Hagrid in the Harry Potter film passed away on Friday at 72. His agent, Belinda Wright, announced his passing in a statement she issued and shared with the BBC. She did not give the actual cause for his death.

Wright said in her statement, “For me personally I shall remember him as an abidingly loyal client. As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty and after 40 years of being proud to be called his agent, I shall miss him.”

Robbie Coltrane was also well-known for portraying a police officer in the British TV series “Cracker” with the same level of commitment that Harry Potter did. He later achieved global fame in the role of Hagrid in the movie adaptation of JK Rowling’s acclaimed and best-selling Harry Potter books. In all eight of the Harry Potter movies, which were produced between 2001 and 2011, he portrayed the kind half-giant who serves as the child wizard’s mentor and companion. In the James Bond thrillers GoldenEye and The World is Not Enough, he also played a Russian mafia boss.

The actor’s supporters have been paying respect to him on social media ever since the news of his passing broke. In addition to being a great actor, Wright noted that he was also brilliantly witty and forensically intelligent. After 40 years of being honoured to serve as his agent, Wright said that he will be missed. According to Wright, Coltrane is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his former wife Rhona Gemmell, and his kids Spencer and Alice.
