Another feature film from Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY Releasing will be made available on Netflix in five areas. What you need to know about the Dominican Republic film Bantú Mama, directed by Ivan Herrera, is forthcoming on November 17, 2022. The film had its world premiere at SXSW in 2021 and was subsequently screened at many other film festivals. ARRAY purchased the film’s rights in October 2022 and plans to release it simultaneously in theatres and on Netflix. What to anticipate from the film made by Point Barre and Basecamp Studio is as follows:
“After being detained in the Dominican Republic, a French woman of African heritage attempts to flee in BANTÚ MAMA. She is taken in by a group of kids in Santo Domingo’s most violent neighbourhood, where she finds refuge. She encounters an unthinkable change in her fate as their protege and mother figure.
The film features Clarisse Albrecht, Arturo Perez, Scarlet Reyes, and Euris Javiel in addition to being written by Ivan Herrera and Albrecht. The countries and territories where Bantú Mama will be available on Netflix include the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
ARRAY Releasing, founded in 2011, aims to screen and promote independent films predominantly by Black artists, people of colour, and women of all kinds. The company has an output agreement with Netflix. The film will sit alongside dozens of other ARRAY Releasing titles, but be warned: they don’t stay on Netflix indefinitely. For example, three years after its initial release, Burning Cane is scheduled to be pulled from Netflix in November 2022. In the case of Bantú Mama, it will be available on Netflix until 2025.
ARRAY Releasing’s most recent acquisitions to Netflix were Definition Please and Donkey Head (both released in January 2022), and even more recently, we saw Learn to Swim added in August 2022 and the documentary What We Leave Behind added at the end of September 2022.
