The Florence Pugh Netflix movie The Wonder will be available starting in November 2022

The Wonder

After her performance in Outlaw King, Netflix is collaborating with Florence Pugh once more on a new historical drama called The Wonder. The Wonder, which is based on Emma Donoghue’s book of the same name, tells the tale of an English nurse who travels to look into a medical oddity in a psychological thriller that also doubles as a tale of good vs evil. Sebastian Lelio, who has won awards for his work on Disobedience, A Fantastic Woman, and Gloria, will serve as the director of Netflix’s The Wonder. Emma Donoghue, Lelio, and screenwriter Alice Birch, who is up for an Emmy in 2020 for her work on Normal People, wrote the script for The Wonder. The movie is a joint venture between House Production and Element Pictures, with Tessa Ross producing through House Productions and Ed Guiney through Element. Here is everything more that we know about The Wonder on Netflix.

What is The Wonder’s plot?

The Wonder, a Netflix original, is based on Emma Donoghue’s 2016 novel of the same name. According to Deadline, the plot is as follows:
The tale is set in the Irish Midlands in 1859 and follows an English nurse, Lib Wright (Florence Pugh), who is invited to a tiny village to examine what some are calling a medical abnormality or a miracle – a girl who is reported to have lived months without sustenance. Tourists have swarmed to the eleven-year-cottage, old’s and a journalist has arrived to chronicle the story. The Wonder is a psychological thriller about two strangers who transform one other’s life, as well as a love story set against evil.

On her website, author Donoghue explained how she came up with the story: “I came across the Fasting Girl craze back in the mid-1990s.” I was immediately drawn to these examples, which looked to resemble both mediaeval saints starving as an act of penance and modern anorexics, yet were not quite the same. It appeared to tell a lot about what it means to be a girl – in various Western countries from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries – that these girls became celebrities by not eating. But I never came across a true instance that struck that tiny bell in my head, alerting me that this was the narrative I needed to write in a novel. Some were just too tragic, even for a writer with my dark sensibilities, while others were far too comedic.
Finally, it dawned to me that if I was still interested by the Fasting Girls after two decades, I should abandon my customary way of writing a historical novel based on a true case and allow myself to make up a plot. Of course, I’d put it in Ireland, not just because it’s my native country, but because we’ve identified ourselves as a nation conversant with hunger since the Great Famine of the 1840s.

Who is in the cast of The Wonder?

Florence Pugh, who will portray the part of Lib Wright in Netflix’s The Wonder, will star as the lead. Pugh has had a string of successful projects in recent years, including Black Widow, Little Women, and Midsommar. O’Byrne (Million Dollar Baby), Dermot Crowley (Luther), Josie Walker (Belfast), Caolan Byrne (Belfast), Caolan Byrne (Be (The Miniaturist).
