According to a statement released by Netflix, the second season of the television show Firefly Lane will be its final. The highly anticipated season 2 is scheduled to debut on December 2, 2022, but the reason behind the decision to discontinue the series is still unknown.

Based on Kristin Hannah’s 500-page novel of the same name, Firefly Lane tells the story of Kate and Tully, two friends who have been friends for more than 30 years. As they traverse life, loss, love, and friendship as they grow up together, their friendship becomes the resolutive force in their lives. While Kate is her meek and reserved best friend who hardly registers, Tully is a brazen and flamboyant wild kid who commands attention. One of the most watched Netflix programmes of 2021 was the first season of the series, which attracted over 49 million viewers in its first 28 days.

The first season began airing on February 1, 2021, and it ended on a tragic cliffhanger that kept viewers guessing. Kate was still dealing with the fallout from Johnny’s disastrous trip to Iraq, and Tully was being sued. In the season 1 finale, the couple also appears to have a serious rift in their relationship. Season 2 will not yet identify the cause of the rift, although fans theorise that a family dispute may be to blame.

Netflix officially announced in a statement stating, “Firefly Lane returns this December 2nd with a concluding 16-episode supersized season. Part 1 debuts December 2, 2022 and includes episodes 201-209. Part 2 will launch in 2023 and include episodes 210-216.” Heigl, Kristin Hannah, and Shawn Williamson serve as executive producers in addition to writer and series creator Maggie Friedman. 16 episodes make up Firefly Lane’s second season. The first nine episodes will premiere on Netflix on December 2, and the remaining seven will do so at some point in 2023.
