Season five of Virgin River has officially begun production after being renewed alongside season four. As a consequence, the team has already been working diligently on the most recent episodes, and two days before the premiere of season four, it was announced that the cast was already back in production.
The official Virgin River Instagram posted a screenshot of everyone at a Zoom table read: “A picture of our incredible cast during a table read for Season 5. Folks, you did hear correctly. Season 5 is currently in production.” Since then, the entire cast has been highly active on social media, and by September, it appears they were almost finished filming and packaging the episodes.
With Patrick Sean Smith joining the cast as the new showrunner, it has also been reported that a new captain is steering the good ship Virgin River. Sadly, despite the fact that these are all excellent updates, they don’t really help us figure out when the new episodes will really return to our televisions. For seasons three and four, the release date was moved ahead to the summer, falling in July 2021 and 2022 respectively. Seasons one and two were released in November 2019 and
December 2020, respectively.
In light of this trend, it is likely that, barring a miraculous turn of events which we wouldn’t rule out for this beautiful river town, we could have to wait a full year for the next updates. When factoring in the necessity for some much-needed rest between the holidays, post-production, and filming, we’d hedge our best at July 2023.

Cast list for Virgin River season 5: Who will be back?

We know exactly who will be returning to the series, at least in the first episode, thanks to the telltale screencap of the Zoom conference. Naturally, Alexandra Breckenridge (Mel) and Martin Henderson(Jack) are the stars of the season. Alexandra in particular has commented about how fun it is to be on set in the summer time, compared to the far more chilly seasons for the previous instalments. “This season we have had the pleasure of starting earlier than we usually do. The weather has been absolutely amazing! I understand why people live in Vancouver now—it is absolutely stunning in the summertime,” she told “We’ve been shooting in the winter the last four seasons, but now we started to spend more time there in the summer; I got to experience a little bit more of the sites and amazing things to do in the city. Typically, it was so cold and wet. The winters could be so brutal… but now I’m like, ‘Oh wow. I get it now. I get this town.”
Along with Zibby Allen (Brie) and Benjamin Hollingsworth, Tim Matheson (Doc) and Annette O’Toole (Hope) have also been confirmed (Dan Brady).

Virgin River season 5 trailer: Is there any new footage yet?

Unfortunately, there isn’t much possibility that we will see any season five footage any time soon given that production has only recently begun. They actually like to keep us waiting—the season four teaser debuted a little more than a week before the episodes did! Enjoy watching the series again in the interim even if that includes a little heartbreak to go with the heartwarming. Netflix has Virgin River accessible right now.
