Analysts already expect Avatar: The Way of Water to rule the box office when it finally makes its long-awaited debut, but they don’t think it will surpass Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick’s record-breaking triumph. According to Variety, analytics company Cinelytic forecasts that The Way of Water will make about $650 million in domestic box office revenue and the same amount on home video. In comparison, the domestic box office revenue for the first Avatar was $772 million. Over the course of its theatrical run, Top Gun: Maverick has made $700 million in the United States.
The fact that the Avatar sequel is being released in 3D, which does not have the same attraction it could have back in 2009, is one of the explanations given for the sequel’s less successful box office performance when compared to Top Gun. It’s partly because The Way of Water lacks the celebrity attraction of actor Tom Cruise, whereas the Top Gun sequel primarily depended on it.
