Netflix’s new runaway hit, director Jennifer Kaylin Robinson’s Do Revenge might be here to transform that. The film delicately treads the line between outright satire and heartfelt homage to the genre that introduced so many of us—while also remaining refreshingly faithful to the ethos of Gen Z culture. “Do Revenge”, Netflix’s assistance to this growing genre, is dark humor directed and co-written by Jennifer Kaylin Robinson that observes two high school seniors, which stars Riverdale‘s Camila Mendes and Stranger Thing‘ Maya Hawke, has a traditional teen-romp plot. Drea Torres (Mendes) is the considerably popular girl with all the fixings—a “hot” and wealthy boyfriend, beautiful girlfriends, and a one-path way to Yale—but she’s had to function for everything she has. She doesn’t reach from money and has carefully curated her school social energy to reflect the earth she wants for herself. After a private video she transmits to her boyfriend, Max (Austin Abrams), is “leaked”, she suddenly teams up with social outcast Eleanor (Hawke), who is peeking for retribution on a bully of her own.
The location and dress seem heavy-handed at moments but turn out to be critical throughout the chronology. The general pretentious and Instagram-like aesthetics of the film do construct a stable and unwavering world for Drea and Eleanor to enact their revenge on equally haughty and Instagram-like people who are anything but stable. What makes Do Revenge a result is that it’s a teen film that knows it’s a teen film. This metasystem is what has drawn not just teenage viewers but also older millennials who recognize the exact films Do Revenge pays reference to.“Do Revenge” is an interesting story of companionship, vengeance, and social interpretation in the era of social media. It was created for individuals with Pinterest panels but it can be appreciated by anyone who won’t try and take it too especially and who has seen the needed prerequisite, “Mean Girls.”
