As Seong Gi-Hun, a character who struggles to make ends meet, in the South Korean survival drama series Squid Game, Lee Jung-jae became the first Korean actor to receive an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. In addition, Netflix unveiled an unseen clip from Season 1 of the South Korean breakthrough hit Squid Game, “the guy behind the survival game,” after revealing that Squid Game will return for Season 2.
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s writer and director, was first seen thanking the series’ fans in an unseen clip that was included in the last sneak peek presentation for Netflix’s Korean lineup at the biennial TUDUM global fan event. “I want to thank all the Netflix viewers one more for their support of Squid Game. In Korean, Hwang said: “Please look forward to season two, which will be full of brand-new storylines. But in the meanwhile, I’ve prepared a little surprise for the fans anticipating Squid Game Season 2.”
The show’s main antagonist, Front Man, is shown holding a goldfish in the deleted scenes. It’s still unknown what the goldfish or the footage means, but they’ll probably play a big role in the second season of Squid Game.
The nine-episode series follows the impoverished competitors in a twisted competition where they compete in various kiddie games. Although it appears to be a regular competition, everyone who loses perishes, and the final survivor receives a hefty cash prize of 45.6 billion. The Korean drama became Netflix’s most-viewed original series of all time as it became an immediate hit. Additionally, it made history earlier this month when it won not one, but two Emmy Awards, making it the first non-English-language program to do so.
In addition to Lee, Jung Ho-yeon, who played Kang Sae-byeok in the series, also gained fame outside after earning a SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor. Anupam Tripathi, Wi Ha-joon, Lee Yoo-Mi, Lee Byung-hun, and Park Hae-soo (The Legend of the Blue Sea), among others, all appeared in the cast (Hospital Playlist).
In addition, Netflix is introducing Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality series that will pit 456 real-life competitors against one another for a $4.56 million prize—obviously without any bloody matches. With a scheduled 2024 launch date, Squid Game’s much-awaited second season will start production the following year.
