The shocking tale of Lori Vallow is revisited in “Sins of Our Mother”

Mrs. Texas contender number 13 Lori Ryan is the blonde woman addressing questions while seated in front of a platform. “I’m a ticking time bomb,” Ryan jokes. “Being a good mom, a good wife, and a good worker is very important to me, and being all those things together is not simple.

That was her name at the moment, but neither it nor her marriage would endure. She had already had five marriages before the pageant took place. After her marriage to Charles Vallow, she became known as Lori Vallow, and in September 2019 when her two younger children went missing, she became well-known. When Vallow resisted providing law officials with information about her children’s whereabouts, the story soon spread across the country. Lori had vanished by the time the cops became concerned about her and proceeded to question her more. Since September, no one has seen Tylee or J.J., her children.

A new true crime docuseries called “Sins of Our Mother” will debut on Netflix in 2022. Through interviews with her mother Janis, her son Colby, Colby’s wife, Lori’s ex-sister-in-law, and others, it explores the narrative of Lori Vallow and her family. Once you are aware of the full narrative that enthralled true crime communities on the internet, it is stunning to watch family videos and images of Lori and her children, grinning and happy. There are many mysterious deaths, including those of two innocent children caught in the middle of this tragic story, behind these scenes of domestic bliss, including those of the expansive and complex Ryan-Vallow family tree, fringe religious beliefs, Lori and her fifth husband’s flight from the authorities, and many other mysterious deaths.

The blended family of Charles and Lori Vallow comprised J.J., their adopted son, as well as the kids from their prior unions. When Lori met Chad Daybell, Charles and Lori’s marriage started to fall apart. Daybell presented at conferences on end-of-the-world readiness and published books with apocalyptic themes based on an extreme strain of Mormonism. Chad told Lori they had been married several times before when they first met her at one of these seminars. They started dating, which resulted in several attempted murders, mysterious deaths, and jail time for both of them.

Viewers may find it difficult to believe none of the story points in this series were concocted in a writer’s room after watching it. Every piece of evidence makes it more and more improbable that this woman didn’t notice anything suspicious during her second or third wedding. Before meeting Charles, she adopted J.J. Before Alex, Lori’s brother, shot and killed Charles Vallow. Before leaving, she left a trail of dead bodies.

Watch “Sins of Our Mother” the next time you need a fix if you appreciate real crime programming like the “Serial” (2014-) podcast or “The Tinder Swindler” (2022), which debuted on Netflix earlier this year. The story of J.J. and Tylee is told online in the most coherent, condensed, and sympathetic way possible since the story broke back in late 2019. This is due to the seamless editing between news footage, body camera videos, and phone recordings, as well as the compelling interviews and family videos.
