The Witcher: Blood Origin’s official release date has been announced by Netflix. The Witcher series has a rich history, starting with a collection of fantasy books and short tales written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and published between 1986 and 2013, with the first English translations appearing in 2007. Before Netflix bought the rights to the story and turned it into a streaming series starring Henry Cavill as the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, the novel was made into a Polish film, television series, and a series of hugely popular computer games. The show’s first two seasons have already been released, while the third is now under development.

Beginning with the animated prequel movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, the Witcher franchise has expanded into some other categories on Netflix. A brand-new prologue, this time in live-action, is forthcoming. The Blood Origin television series, which is set 1200 years before The Witcher, will explore the development of the first Witcher and the lives of ancient elves as they build to the Conjunction of the Spheres, a significant historical occurrence. Sophia Brown, Laurence O’Fuarain, Lenny Henry, Mirren Mack, Nathaniel Curtis, Dylan Moran, and Michelle Yeoh, who starred in Everything Everywhere Also At Once, will all appear in the series.

Netflix announced The Witcher: Blood Origin’s official release date today at their international fan gathering TUDUM. The show’s official premiere date has been changed to Christmas Day, December 25. There will be some fierce competition for streaming viewers that week since this is the same day that Netflix releases Matilda: The Musical and only two days following the release of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Why will Netflix release The Witcher: Blood Origin on Christmas?

It might seem strange for Netflix to premiere a new show on Christmas. It initially appears like a formula for poor viewing given that many families would be busy with celebrations on that day all across the world. Recently, though, that hasn’t been the case, with several Christmas-related or Christmas-day films doing well both in theatres and online, including films as diverse as Django Unchained, Les Misérables, and the MCU blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Christmas is also a lucky release date for Netflix since they previously utilized the occasion to introduce Bridgerton season 1, which was a huge success for the service. Given that the first season of the original series began on December 20, 2019, this is also a period that has shown to be successful for the Witcher franchise. The Witcher: Blood Origin may benefit greatly from the fact that viewers that are fathered for the holiday are looking for quality entertainment alternatives to enjoy while spending time with their relatives.
