The ensemble of “Amsterdam,” the next murder mystery film from David O. Russell, is outstanding. It will be fascinating to watch how all of these elements come together in one movie with actors like Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, Timothy Olyphant, and many more scheduled to participate.
Mike Myers, who is best known for his humorous roles in movies like “Wayne’s World,” “Austin Powers,” and “Shrek,” was one of the more unexpected casting decisions made for the movie. The humorous elements in David O. Russell’s movies are nearly always present, but Myers seldom ventures outside of plain comedy to perform actions that are even remotely serious.
Myers has a reputation for being fairly tough to deal with at times, but fortunately, Russell also shares this trait. Given that Russell had been working on the idea for this movie for several years, it is reasonable to assume that Myers was cast with much care. Nonetheless, the casting was rather hazardous for both of those reasons.
Therefore, it seems natural that Myers would have felt a little out of his element when performing with an all-star cast. Myers recently discussed how gratifying and terrifying it was to work opposite Michael Shannon in a press junket interview.
Differently from Myers, Michael Shannon, the star of movies like “8 Mile” and “Pearl Harbor,” is a highly good actor. Shannon has been in movies, television series, and plays in every imaginable genre, including comedies, tragedies, and superhero flicks.
Since making his acting debut in “Groundhog’s Day” in 1993, Shannon has received a tonne of work and is a true professional.
As Myers said at a recent press event attended by Film, the chance to share scenes with a skilled actor like Shannon and the rest of the ensemble was so amazing that it occasionally knocked him off his game.
The cast of “Amsterdam” is a veritable witch brew that Russell has mixed, so it will be fascinating to watch how a bizarre addition like Mike Myers would alter the entire mixture. The movie will begin showing in theatres on October 7.
