What to Expect from Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 on Netflix

Vikings Valhalla

The eagerly awaited Vikings: Valhalla sequel to MGM’s Vikings debuted on Netflix in early 2022, and there will be more in 2023. Given that season 2 of the programme has already begun filming, here is an updated list of everything we currently know about Vikings: Valhalla season 2 on Netflix.
Michael Hirst’s historical drama Vikings: Valhalla, a Netflix Original, is a prequel to the iconic Vikings History Channel series. Like its predecessor, which had six seasons, this one is made by MGM Productions. The events of Vikings: Valhalla take place 100 years after the Great Viking army, led by Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons, set sail for England in search of retribution for his death.

When was the second season of Vikings: Valhalla announced?

Vikings: Valhalla has not only been renewed for a second season, but it has also been confirmed ahead of time that it has been renewed for a third season. The show’s early renewal is due to the large upfront order it received when it was first announced. A total of 24 episodes were commissioned.
As part of this deal with Netflix UK, Netflix also obtained the licencing rights to the original Vikings series, and Netflix US is still set to receive seasons 1-6 in a few years. Vikings: Valhalla will return for two extra seasons on March 9th, 2022, according to Netflix.

How popular was Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix?

Data from Netflix’s Top 10 We have a very good idea of how well the show is doing. It had 80.56 million hours watched in its first two days on the site, making it the second most-watched show that week. Between February 25th and April 3rd, 2022 (the show’s first 37 days on Netflix), the show received 265,550,000 hours of global viewing. Making comparisons is tricky with this new hourly data, but we can see that Vikings: Valhalla performed nicely (at least in the first 2-3 weeks) compared to The Last Kingdom’s final season, which was also published in early 2022. The concert was a critical success, with RottenTomatoes giving it an 89% (classified as Certified Fresh) rating, however crowd reactions were mixed. The audience score on RottenTomatoes as of early April 2022 is 54%. On IMDb, the show has a far higher rating of 7.2, with episode 8 receiving an 8.1.

What can we expect from Vikings: Valhalla’s second season?

Vikings: Valhalla, like its predecessor, takes significant compromises with historical accuracy in favour of action and drama. Many notable recorded events occurred during this time period, which we may expect to witness in season 2 and beyond. The Greenlander’s trek to the east has caused Leif and his sister, Freydis, much suffering and sadness. All of their comrades who sailed with them to Denmark perished. Lif, his sweetheart and fellow warrior who perished during the invasion of Kattegat, had the greatest impact on Leif.

Lif was the only person who could keep Leif grounded and prevent him from becoming a berserker like his famed berserker father, Erik the Red. Leif’s neck snapped as a result of her death, resulting in the explorer wearing a pair of dual axes, no armour, and single-handedly dispatching an entire group of Viking warriors without breaking a sweat. Leif’s war cry indicated that he, like his father before him, is embracing his bloodthirsty berserker nature. Fate can be cruel, and if Leif follows in his father’s footsteps, he may be banished or exiled from the Viking society, forcing the legendary explorer to sail west and establish Vinland, the first European settlement in the Americas.

The early emergence of Harald Sigurdson, better known as Harold Hardrada, is one of the most significant creative liberties that Vikings: Valhalla has taken with history.
Harold’s achievements in the Viking realm are legendary, but none of them occurred during the events of Viking: Valhalla because the future King of Norway was only a baby, born in Ringerike, Norway, to Asta and Sigurd in 1015, one year after the collapse of London Bridge. The Harald represented in Valhalla has King Cnut’s open backing, but with the fate of his half-brother Olaf unknown, not to mention escaping Kattegat with Freydis, Harald’s path to becoming king remains a long one.

The worship of the old gods is dwindling as a result of the destruction of Upsala and the rise of Christianity in the Viking culture. Freydis and the Greenlanders worship the ancient ways, but even Leif is interested in Christianity as a method to explain all of the remarkable ways he overcomes death. It’s still unclear what “the Last” means and what it signifies for Freydis. This could imply that Freydis is the last person capable of spreading Old Ways worship, and her destiny may be to become a high priestess or a seer.

When will Vikings: Valhalla season 2 be released?

Season 3 production is also underway. Netflix confirmed the second and third seasons, stating that filming would begin in Spring 2022. We’ve learnt that they’ll be preparing during April in order to begin filming in May 2022.
Beyond a general 2023 release date, Netflix has not confirmed a precise release date for Vikings: Valhalla season 2. However, we may make an educated judgement as to when the second season will be released. With work on the second season wrapping in November 2021, we may expect the season to premiere on Netflix in early 2023, most likely between January and March 2023. Vikings: Valhalla will include 24 episodes distributed across three seasons.
