On Saturday afternoon, it was announced at the D23 Studio Showcase panel that the animated Star Wars anthology series Tales of the Jedi will debut on Disney+ this fall, on October 28, 2022. The animated series was first announced at Star Wars Celebration in May, with lucky fans present at the panel getting a first look at the new shorts, which will feature Ahsoka Tano, Count Dooku, and Qui-Gon Jinn, among others. This isn’t their only animated series in the works; a second, highly anticipated season of The Bad Batch is also set to premiere on the streaming service soon.

Tales of the Jedi is created by Dave Filoni and Charles Murray for Disney+. It is a Star Wars film that explores various Jedi characters from the prequel trilogy era. Lucasfilm Animation created the series. Filoni started writing the series while working on The Mandalorian, a Star Wars series, and revealed the first official details about it in May 2022. It consists of six episodes divided into two “paths,” one following the character Ahsoka Tano and the other Count Dooku. The series’ voices are provided by Liam Neeson, Micheál Richardson, Janina Gavankar, Matt Lanter, and Ashley Eckstein, and it employs the same animation style as Filoni’s previous series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

This is also not the first time in recent years that Star Wars has gone the anthology route with their shows. Star Wars: Visions debuted on Disney+ last year, showcasing 9 short films from a handful of Japanese animation studios. This series was so popular that it was quickly renewed for a second season. Season 2 will broaden the scope of animation houses involved, with companies from South America, Europe, and Asia all participating in telling a story in the Galaxy, Far, Far Away.

Star Wars has released a number of animated projects in recent years, including Star Wars: Galaxy of Creatures, Star Wars: Galactic Pals, Star Wars: Roll Out, and Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, all aimed at a younger audience and released online on their YouTube channel.
