Zac Efron has finally revealed the truth behind the rumours that he had plastic surgery last year. Rumors about his jawline changing surfaced last April, with many claiming he appeared to have had cosmetic surgery in an Earth Day PSA. However, in a recent interview with Men’s Health, the actor revealed the truth about his facial transformation. Admitting that his face has changed over the years, the Baywatch star explained that it was primarily due to a fall at his home in November 2013 that resulted in his face and jaw muscles having to work extra hard.
The actor also revealed that he had to see a physical therapist in order to recover from his injury. The actor continued, “The masseters just grew. They just got really, really big.” Zac also revealed that after netizens couldn’t stop talking about his transformation, it was his mother who informed him about the plastic surgery rumours. In an interview with Men’s Health, he stated, “If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do. I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work.”
The actor explained that he had suffered a severe jaw injury a few years ago. Efron was running through his house in socks when he slipped and collided with a granite fountain, losing consciousness and later waking up with his chin bone “hanging off his face.” As a result of the injury, the muscles on the inside of his face and jaw had to work extra hard to compensate, which could explain why his face was swollen last year. While Efron is working with a specialist to get the problem under control, he told the outlet that he was in Australia at the time and hadn’t been keeping up with physical therapy.
In the same interview, Efron discussed the impact of Baywatch on his life, as well as the body image issues he encountered while working on the film. While trying to get in shape, the actor revealed that he developed insomnia and fell into a “pretty bad depression” for a long time. He also revealed that he was unaware of the social media buzz surrounding his jaw until his mother asked if he’d had plastic surgery. Efron himself appears to be unconcerned about internet rumours, as he has stated that he has tried to ignore what the public has to say about him since he rose to fame.
