In a new teaser for Luckiest Girl Alive, Mila Kunis appears to have the best of luck. The actor plays freshly appointed New York Times reporter Ani FaNelli in the movie. She has money, style, a blue-collar fiancée, and most crucially, “the edge.” Everything from her carefully crafted existence threatens to fall apart before her eyes when a documentary filmmaker approaches her about an event that occurred at her school years ago. The movie, which is based on Jessica Knoll’s same-titled New York Times bestseller, has its limited theatrical debut on September 30 before debuting on Netflix on October 7.

The teaser presents Ani’s seemingly ideal life as she lists all the recent things that have gone well for her, including her work and her lavish forthcoming wedding. Even the luckiest individuals occasionally experience darker periods and horrible things; for Ani, catastrophe begins when she is contacted about making a true-crime documentary. She is said to have been involved in a school shooting, and the documentary maker wants to know more about her connection to the perpetrators.

Ani’s darker side starts to show after that. She has kept all of her prior information a secret out of concern for what her husband, his friends, his family, and everyone else may think if they learned the truth. Things worsen when a former classmate accuses her of something that further connects her to her past; yet, when he threatens her, it appears that not everything is as it seems. Ani’s memories of being tormented at school and running to a teacher for help only serve to confirm that something terrible happened following the bullet that nearly killed her. Whatever transpired left her irrevocably transformed, leading her to create a new persona to escape everything.
