After the HBO fantasy drama series’ the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon success, co-showrunner and director Miguel Sapochnik has announced that he is leaving his job. For the length of the fantasy drama series, Sapochnik will continue to serve as an executive producer while departing from HBO to work on new projects, but his co-creator Ryan Condal will serve as the sole showrunner of the spin-off. The director also departs with a first-look agreement with HBO to create new projects.

For the past three years, Sapochnik has been working on the prequel to the popular television series Game of Thrones. His efforts appear to be beginning to bear fruit as the series’ premiere received 25 million views. Within the first day of release, 10.2 million people watched the most current second episode. In a statement, Sapochnik praised the prequel series’ cast and crew while also stating that it has been fantastic to be a part of the Thrones universe for the past few years. Alan Taylor, another Game of Thrones veteran who will serve as director and producer, was given the reins.

Sapochnik said in a statement, “I am so proud of what we accomplished with season 1 and overjoyed by the enthusiastic reaction of our viewers. It was incredibly tough to decide to move on, but I know that it is the right choice for me, personally and professionally. As I do so, though, I am deeply comforted to know that Alan will be joining the series. He’s someone I’ve known and respected for a long time, and I believe this precious series could not be in safer hands. I am so glad to remain a part of the HBO and House of the Dragon family and, of course, I wish Ryan and his team success and all the best with season 2 and beyond.”

After only two episodes of House of the Dragon, Westeros is already tense as politics and plotting have picked up steam. Following the death of his queen, King Viserys Targaryen, played by Paddy Considine, has made the decision to choose a new wife. His bride-choice infuriated some influential allies, especially his daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock). All of this occurs as a war on the Stepstones threatens to pit Prince Craghas Drahar, the Crabfeeder, against the Houses of Velaryon and Targaryen (Daniel Scott-Smith).
