Everything We Know So Far About Tyler Perry’s Netflix Movie A Jazzman’s Blues

Tyler Perry and Netflix continue their collaboration with another ambitious feature film, A Jazzman’s Blues, following their successful first collaboration in A Fall from Grace. Perry’s pet project and the first screenplay he ever wrote was 26 years ago. After trying for two decades, he finally found the right partners in Netflix to produce with. Perry, best known for his projects such as the character of Madea in many of his films, House of Payne, The Oval, and others, will write and direct A Jazzman’s Blues. Perry has previously spoken out about the film and, most recently, this collaboration with Netflix:

“I’ve been waiting for a quarter-century to tell this story, and now is the perfect time, and Netflix is the perfect partner.” That is my labour of love; it is what I want to do the most.” The film was notably on Lionsgate’s slate in 2006.
Perry’s long-time collaborator, producer Michelle Sneed, will also serve as executive producer on this project. It is not believed that this is the only Tyler Perry project in the works at Netflix. We reported in December 2021 that Netflix is currently working on a brand new untitled film with Perry set to star.

What is A Jazzman’s Blues’ storyline?

In the post-World War II South, a young Black jazz singer leaves his small town in search of fame in the movie A Jazzman’s Blues. The film’s 1937–1987 time frame will allow for some interesting storytelling as it delves deeply into the character’s past, present, and future. The movie’s official tagline is as follows:
An investigation into an unsolved murder “unveils a story full of forbidden love, deceit, and a secret that has been held for 40 years,” taking place between 1937 and 1987. Apparently, the movie will have a R rating.

In A Jazzman’s Blues, who is cast?

The lead roles were cast in March 2021, with relative newcomers Joshua Boone (Wheels, Premature) and Solea Pfeiffer (The Good Fight, Curb Your Enthusiasm) being announced. Both have prior theatre and singing experience, with Pfeiffer portraying Elza Hamilton during the US Tour of the critically acclaimed musical Hamilton. No additional cast members have yet been revealed.
Tyler Perry originally wanted to star in the 1995 film alongside Will Smith, Halle Berry, Diana Ross, and Ben Kingsley.

Many more actors and actresses have confirmed their participation since then. They are as follows:

Ryan Eggold (BlacKkKlansman)
Milauna Jackson (Dexter)
E. Roger Mitchell as Buster (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire)
Amirah Vann (Underground)
Lauren Buglioli (The Oval)
Brent Antonello (S.W.A.T.)
Austin Scott as Willie Earl (Pose)
Cody Pressley as Mr. Lincoln (The First Lady)
