The second season of HBO’s House of the Dragon has just been officially confirmed. The decision to renew was made shortly after House of the Dragon’s season premiere on Sunday, which attracted 10 million people overnight, an HBO record for a series launch, and about on pace with the sixth season premiere of Game of Thrones. The first episode’s viewership in the United States has risen to 20 million viewers across linear, on demand, and HBO Max platforms, according to a new report from HBO.

George R. R. Martin, the executive producer of the television series and author of the 2018 novel Fire & Blood, served as the inspiration for House of the Dragon. Beginning 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, who is portrayed in Game of Thrones by the incomparable Emilia Clarke, the series explores the tale of house Targaryen. The main Targaryen characters in the series are Rhaenyra, who was portrayed by Milly Alcock in her younger years and by Emma D’Arcy in her more mature years.

Viserys, who is played by Paddy Considine with sincerity, is her father and a much nicer king than we have seen in most Game of Thrones seasons. Already, tensions were high.Fans can rest easy knowing that this story of avaricious schemes and scheming intrigues would continue for more than 10 episodes, despite the fact that tensions were already high in the first episode.

HBO executives have been supportive of Dragon and have previously made it seem like they would be quick to approve further episodes should the debut go well. The renewal might be significant for more than just Dragon’s future. At least seven Game of Thrones spinoff projects are currently in development on HBO. The fact that Dragon performed well enough to prompt a renewal for a second season may indicate that at least one other show will eventually receive a series order.

Executive Vice President of HBO programming, Francesca Orsi said, “We are beyond proud of what the entire HOUSE OF THE DRAGON team has accomplished with season one. Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”
