Netflix is getting a live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga. Tomorrow Studios, the same production team behind Netflix’s now-cancelled Cowboy Bebop adaptation, is behind the series. Season 1 of Netflix’s One Piece has officially wrapped filming, so here’s everything we know so far. As far as franchises go, One Piece is one of the most popular and well-known manga series of all time. Since its debut on July 22nd, 1997 in an issue of Weekly Shnen Jump, 969 chapters and 95 volumes of the manga have been published, with more on the way.
With over 462 million copies sold, One Piece is also the best-selling manga of all time, outselling Dragon Ball, Golgo 13, and Naruto. This also makes One Piece one of the most successful fictional franchises of all time, with over $21 billion in revenue generated across multiple mangas, films, video games, and other forms of merchandise.
What is the plot of One Piece?
The plot of One Piece takes place on an alternate Earth that is currently experiencing the ‘Golden Age of Pirates.’ The seas are ruled by ruthless cutthroat pirates, and only the strongest have a chance to lay claim to the mythical treasure known as ‘One Piece,’ which was left behind by the greatest pirate of all time, Gol D. Roger. Years after Gol D. Roger’s death, a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy dreams of raising his own crew, finding One Piece, and proclaiming himself Pirate King.
Luffy gains incredible strength and agility after consuming a devil fruit that gives him the ability to transform his body into rubber. When Luffy reaches adulthood, he embarks on his epic journey to become the next Pirate King from Foosha Village in East Blue.
Who is the creator of the One Piece Netflix series?
The series’ primary production company is Tomorrow Studios, as we already mentioned. Their notable works include Snowpiercer for TNT and Hanna for Prime Video. The production company is also getting Cowboy Bebop ready for Netflix, of course. That brings us to the series’ showrunner. The One Piece television series will be directed by Steven Maeda. He has worked on shows like The X Files, Lost, Lie to Me, Helix, and Day Break over the course of his lengthy career.
One Piece’s writing team includes the following people:
In a virtual Zoom meeting in May 2020, the writers spent their final time working together. The first One Piece episode is anticipated to be directed by Marc Jobst. His notable directing credits include Daredevil, The Punisher, and The Witcher episodes on Netflix.

When will it be available on Netflix?
Filming took an eternity to begin. If it hadn’t been for the global pandemic, production would have likely begun in the summer of 2020. We’ve had several delays and false filming start dates since then.
The majority of the filming is taking place at Cape Town Film Studios, which has plenty of space for the pirate ships. According to someone familiar with the production, three pirate ships have been built for the show so far.
Netflix officially revealed the script for the first episode on September 3rd, 2021. It’s called “Romance Dawn” and was written by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda. Steven Maeda announced in early October 2021 that he had arrived in Cape Town (where the series is set to film). According to multiple production listings, filming began in February 2022, with the show originally scheduled to conclude on July 10th, 2022. Marc Jobst, who is directing episodes 1 and 2 of the show, announced on May 8th, 2022, that those first two episodes had wrapped filming on May 7th.
